Mountain biking has been a passion of mine for years. I compete in races and ride whenever I can, not just for the thrill, but for the lessons it teaches me about focus, resilience and strategy. Over time, I have realised that what works on the trails often works in business too.
Plan Your Route but Expect Obstacles
Before any ride, I plan my route carefully. I consider the terrain, steep climbs, technical sections and possible hazards. No ride ever goes exactly as planned as rocks shift, trails get muddy or branches block the path… or you and your riding buddies get stung by wasps!
Business is very similar. Planning is essential. You need clear goals, a strategy and defined milestones. Challenges will always appear. The difference between success and struggle is how quickly you adapt, adjust and keep moving forward.
Pace Yourself for Long Term Success
On a long ride, going full speed from the start might feel good, but it is not sustainable. I have learned to pace myself, push hard on the climbs when I can, and recover when needed. In business, the same principle applies. You cannot burn yourself or your team out chasing short term wins. Balance your effort, focus on the right priorities and build sustainable growth.
Adapt Quickly to Changing Conditions
Mountain biking requires instant decisions. A sudden muddy patch or a fallen tree requires a quick adjustment or you risk crashing. In business, market conditions, customer behaviour and competition can change overnight. The businesses that thrive are the ones that pivot quickly, make smart decisions under pressure and do not lose momentum.
Focus on Technique Not Just Power
Strength is helpful, but skill makes the difference. Smooth gear changes, controlled braking and efficient pedalling allow me to navigate tough terrain successfully. In business, execution is everything. A great idea will not get you far without strong systems, processes and the ability to implement consistently. Focus on honing your skills and building processes that work.
Learn from Every Ride
Every ride teaches me something about where I stumbled, what worked and how to ride smarter next time. Business works the same way. Regularly reviewing successes and failures, reflecting on lessons learned and applying them ensures continuous improvement and stronger results.
Mountain biking has taught me resilience, strategy and adaptability, qualities I bring to the businesses I coach.
